Located in tropical Queensland, the growing city of Mackay is fast becoming a destination as popular with international tourists as it is with Australian ones. And with so much to see and do there, it’s no surprise! From glorious beaches, world class views, a growing cultural centre, strong history and fabulous national parks there really is something for everyone here. So cast your eyes over this list of the best 20 things to do in and around Mackay and start planning your time there now!

 1. Snap Kangaroos on the Beach at Dawn

Just north of the city, the wonderful Cape Hillsborough National Park is famous for the kangaroos and wallabies that gather on the beach here at dawn. Camp overnight in the park, then get up early to test your chances of snapping this iconic Australian image.

2. Spot the Shy Platypus at Broken River

Keeping up the wildlife theme, why not head inland towards the township of Eungella. Only 5km here is one of the most famous platypus spotting areas in the whole of the country. Broken River has some awesome viewing platforms, easy parking, a great boardwalk, lovely café and picnic area all to help you spot these native and rare Australian animals with ease.

3. Cool Down at the Bluewater Lagoon

Back in the heart of the city, the Bluewater Lagoon is a water park fun for the whole family. Cool down from the tropical heat and spend a day splashing around in the centre of Mackay for free!

4. Hit the Beach at Eimeo

If swimming in the sea is more your thing than a swimming pool, why not had to Mackay’s Northern Beaches to enjoy the water instead. Eimeo Beach has lifeguards and makes for a great swimming spot – just watch out for the stingers!

5. Test your Sweet Tooth at the Sarina Sugar Shed

South of Mackay is the town of Sarina, famous for its sugar production – the evidence of which can be spotted in fields for hundreds of miles around! Why not learn more about the local industry by taking a trip to the interactive and award-winning Sugar Shed to explore how exactly sugar is made in this miniature mill and distillery.

6. Sip Sundowners at the Marina

If it’s a bit of class you’re after, then head to Mackay’s marina to try out some of the best cocktails around as you watch luxurious yachts go by and the water glisten below them. Sundays sundowners here are particularly popular.

7. Zipwire at Finch Hatton Gorge

Get a birds-eye view of the rainforest surrounding Mackay by zipwiring 25m above the ground at Finch Hatton Gorge. Part of Eungella National Park, this area has some stunning swaths of preserved landscape and soaring above it gives the ultimate perspective.

8. Get your Cultural Fix at the Artspace

Right next to Mackay’s main street, the impressive Artspace building glitters with potential. Stop by and enjoy some of the traveling exhibitions it showcases or take part in some of the great workshops held there.

9. Rev up the 4wd at Cape Palmerston

Yet another national park near Mackey, Cape Palmerston is a 4wd paradise! With tons of tracks to explore and stunning views from cliff tops to the coastline, this a must do for anyone that loves getting amongst the great outdoors. With mangrove swamps, sand dunes and rainforest, there’s also plenty of wildlife to be seen including dugongs, turtles and whales during the right season.

10. Fish to your Heart’s Content

Too many to list here, the locations around Mackay and its surrounds are a fishing fanatics dream! Try the Pioneer river for bream or flathead, Clairview for crabbing or funnel creek for the odd sooty grunter!

11. Picnic in the Botanic Gardens

With 3km of trails and grassy areas beside them, the Botanic gardens in Mackay are perfect for an alfresco lunch with friends.

12. Try to Stay on a Wakeboard

From beginners to pros, wakeboarding at Cable park is great fun for all. All equipment is provided at this man-made lake adventure zone.

13. Go Back in Time with the Heritage Trail

Step back in time as you walk the Mackay’s heritage trail. Guided tours are available, or grab a brochure from the Visitor Centre and do it yourself!

14. Cycle the Public Art Trail

The Bluewater Trail in Mackay has over 20km of paths that are bike-friendly and link up popular attractions including the impressive public art installations that border the river.

15. Taste Test at the Micro-Brewery

With its very own micro-brewery, there’s no reason not enjoy a good beer in Mackay! Some get some firsthand experience and tasting tests available, you can even take your favourite brews home!

16. Enjoy the View at Lamberts Beach

Near the Marina and Slade Point, Lamberts Beach is one the of the city’s best. Enjoy a delightful stroll along here and then take in the stunning views from the lookout – a great place for sunset!

17. Snap Sunset at Shoal Point

The other great place for sunset viewing in Mackay is Shoal Point on the Northern Beaches. The huge tidal range here makes for an impressive shot and the colours against the water are hard to beat.

18. Camp in the Cloud Forest

Up in Clarke’s Range, Eungella National Park is about 90km from Mackay but well worth the drive. Plus, when you get here it’s possible to camp and enjoy the gorgeous surrounds for even longer. The night sky out here is incredible, with almost no light pollution around, and in the morning you can enjoy gorgeous views of the Pioneer Valley which stretches before you.

19. Spot Turtles at Andrew’s Point

In Cape Hillsborough National Park one of the best walks you can do is up the headland to Andrew’s Point. From here you get stunning views along the coast and also the chance to spot turtles feeding in the seagrass below.

20. BBQ at Bucasia

One of the Northern Beaches most popular spots, Bucasia Beach also has a park behind it with a number of great free BBQs. Enjoy the great climate of Mackay in true Aussie style as you fire up the barbie with a few beers and a beach view!
