I had the same problem, but I started a simple spreadsheet to track all my accounts—old jobs, savings, and even refunds I’m waiting on. I also set yearly calendar reminders to review everything. It’s amazing how easy it is to forget small assets over time. Checking your state’s unclaimed property site yearly is also smart. This article about hiding cash gave me more ideas of places to check. Staying organized has already helped me recover a few hundred dollars!

Great system! A spreadsheet and reminders make it so much easier to stay on top of forgotten accounts and funds.

I agree — checking unclaimed property sites yearly is smart. I’ve found surprise money that way too. Organization really pays off!
